May 12, 2019: You Are With Me
Text for Sunday, May 12, 2019:
PReparation for worship
“Depth and strength underlie the simplicity of Psalm 23. Its peace is not escape; its contentment is not complacency: there is readiness to face deep darkness and imminent attack, and the climax reveals a love which points us towards no material goal but to the Lord Himself.” – Derek Kidner
“It is not that He is closer in the valley, but that in the valley we realize how close He has always been.” – Dale Ralph Davis
About twelve hours before my Dad breathed his last, my brother and I, our wives, and most of our kids gathered around his bed and said in unison the 23rd Psalm. It was a sweet time.
The 23rd Psalm has been a treasure trove of promises made by our Good Shepherd for every circumstance in life. In many ways reading it and speaking it are like being made to lie down in green pastures and being led by still waters.
And all of this is personal: my, I, me.
It is such a picture of calm in the face of a broken world. Do you need peace today?
