June 2, 2019: I Am Coming Soon
Text for Sunday, June 2, 2019:
PReparation for worship
“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’” – Revelation 22:17
The Church in her militant state
Is weary, and cannot forbear,
The saints in an agony wait
To see Him again in the air,
The Spirit invites in the Bride
Her heavenly Lord to descend,
And place her enthroned at His side
In glory that never shall end.
– Charles Wesley, 1762
The hymn writer says of Jesus Christ, the Rock of Ages, “Thou must save and thou alone.” We certainly know this applies to our personal salvation through the atoning work of the cross of Jesus Christ.
But this phrase also points us to the necessity of Jesus saving the whole of creation. What we are asking for when we say, “Come, Lord Jesus,” is for the righteousness of God to cover the whole earth. We are asking for judgment and justice to have its way in every corner of the universe.
This hope is what animates Jesus-glorifying acts like tutoring kids, feeding the hungry, repairing the homes of widows, and bearing witness to the Gospel.
We are pointed at this wonderful future when we, in our feeble and failing way, bear witness in word and deed to the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ.
