December 23, 2018: Blessed
TEXT FOR SUNDAY, December 23, 2018:
The eternal Son of God,
Who is and remains true and eternal God,
took to Himself, through the working of the Holy Spirit,
from the flesh and blood of the virgin Mary,
a truly human nature
so that He might become David’s true descendant,
like His brothers in every way except for sin.
–Heidelberg Catechism 35 (1563)
The first faithful response to the Incarnation, indeed perhaps the confirmation of the Incarnation is from an unseen source. A fetus.
We only know that John the Baptist leapt in his mother’s womb because she felt it and spoke about it. Her speech confirming the presence of Jesus inside Mary is what leads to Mary’s song.
Think about that. From the mouths of babes. Literally, from the kicks and jumps of an unborn child, God bears witness to himself and to his saving promise.
